Surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, the municipality of Tuusniemi is located in the heart of Eastern Finland halfway between the cities of Kuopio and Joensuu on Highway 9. 

Tuusniemi boasts Lake Juojärvi - voted the Provincial Lake of Nothern Savo - an excellent marina in the municipal centre and the Seinävuori Gorge. The Heinävesi route, recognised as a national scenic area, provides access to the Valamo Monastery and, via the Saimaa Canal, to all the seven seas.

With a wide range of services and sound finances, the municipality is well placed to develop its economy. Substantial amounts of money are invested every year in enhancing the general outlook of the municipality.

Tuusniemi, widely known as an easy-going locality for residents and holiday-home owners alike, is engaged in close cooperation with Kuopio, the largest city in Eastern Finland.


The municipality of Tuusniemi was founded in 1870.

Its population is 2,801 and there are 1,355 holiday homes.

Tuusniemi has an area of 699.43 km2, of which watercourses account for 156,22 km2.
